Most Canadians know that if you commit a murder, you’re presumed innocent until proven guilty. But what most Canadians don’t know is that if the CRA assesses you with a tax debt, you are presumed guilty, and you will remain guilty until you can prove yourself innocent. And if you don’t’ have the knowledge or expertise to prove yourself innocent ..... well, that’s too bad because that’s the way our tax system works. |
Guilty unless you can prove yourself innocent. It’s a simple fact. This is a fact I have firsthand knowledge of, because I worked for Canada’s National Department of Revenue for almost 8 years. I saw bankrupts and I saw millionaires, I worked with individuals, proprietors, partnerships, corporations and trusts. I saw a lot during those years I saw some good. Such as the passing of Fairness Legislation. A law which helps to eliminate penalty and interest, something very few Canadians are aware of. |
